Das palästinensische Grenzdorf Bilin will an seinem Konzept der Gewaltlosigkeit festhalten – auch nach dem Tod einer Demonstrantin. Steinewerfen ist in Bilin verpönt.

Der unmittelbar im Grenzbereich und etwa auf halber Strecke zwischen Tel Aviv und Jerusalem gelegene Ort Bilin gilt seit über fünf Jahren als Paradebeispiel für den friedlichen palästinensischen Widerstand, der inzwischen auch in anderen Grenzdörfern Schule macht. Die beharrlich jeden Freitag stattfindenden Demonstrationen laufen genau nach Wunsch westlicher Friedensbewegungen ab: gewaltlos. Steinewerfen ist verpönt.

Was halt, bestenfalls, nur die halbe Wahrheit ist. Immerhin schmeißt der Demonstrant auf diesem Bild ja auch nur ein Molotowcocktail und keinen Stein.

Weiter berichtet das Qualitätsmedium taz:

Für die 36-jährige Jahawer Abu Rahmah war der heftige Tränengasbeschuss der Soldaten zu viel.

“Die Demonstration am Freitag war besonders groß”, berichtet Jonathan Pollak, Medienkoordinator des “Volkskomitees”. Gewöhnlich kommen nur ein paar Dutzend Demonstranten, doch beim letzten Mal sollen es rund tausend gewesen sein, darunter auch der palästinensische Premierminister Salam Fayyad, der Bilin jedoch noch vor dem gewaltsamen Zwischenfall wieder verließ. “Wir waren kaum in Sichtweite, als die Soldaten anfingen, Tränengas abzuschießen”, sagt Pollak. Abu Rahmah sei gestürzt und bewusstlos gewesen, bevor sie in ein Krankenhaus nach Ramallah gebracht wurde, wo sie starb.

The Nana-Channel 10 website reported that a military investigation found that the woman who supposedly died when she inhaled tear gas at a demonstration Friday was not even present at the protest. She did not die of tear gas inhalation but of cancer, the IDF found, and had been lying in a hospital bed for ten days before passing away.

Aber falls wirklich (nicht zum ersten Mal) eine Geschichte an den Haaren herbeigezogen wurde, sollten wir diesmal wirklich die Sache so publik wie möglich machen. Es ist nicht nur eine Frechheit Israel gegenüber, sondern auch eine riesige Respektlosigkeit der Toten gegenüber. Es sind genügend Tote auf Israels Kappe gegangen, die nicht durch Israel gestorben sind – und nur Zyniker können sagen, „ist doch egal, tot ist tot, und Israel hat eh genug auf dem Gewissen“. Das stimmt nicht. Die Umstände des Tods müssen geklärt werden, bei jedem Menschen. Wenn Israel ihren Tod verursacht hat, dann muß das Konsequenzen haben – nicht als ob uns eine weitere Untersuchungskomission zum Glück fehlt, aber Menschenleben ist Menschenleben und vielleicht kann man ja für Bilin mal eine andere Strategie andenken?

[...] Tsvangirai and his political party, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), are considered Zimbabwe’s greatest hopes for unseating the country’s long-time de facto dictator Robert Mugabe and bringing democratic reforms to the country.

The topic of the meeting was the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by a collection of western countries, including the U.S. and E.U. Tsvangirai told the western officials that, while there had been some progress in the last year, Mugabe and his supporters were dragging their feet on delivering political reforms. To overcome this, he said that the sanctions on Zimbabwe “must be kept in place” to induce Mugabe into giving up some political power.

Later that day, the U.S. embassy in Zimbabwe dutifully reported the details of the meeting to Washington in a confidential U.S. State Department diplomatic cable. And slightly less than one year later, WikiLeaks released it to the world.

The reaction in Zimbabwe was swift. Zimbabwe’s Mugabe-appointed attorney general announced he was investigating the Prime Minister on treason charges based exclusively on the contents of the leaked cable. While it’s unlikely Tsvangirai could be convicted on the contents of the cable alone, the political damage has already been done. The cable provides Mugabe the opportunity to portray Tsvangirai as an agent of foreign governments working against the people of Zimbabwe.

To go on pretending that Britain’s enemies want to destroy “what we hold dear” encourages racism; what we are confronting here is a specific, direct, centralized attack on London as a result of a “war on terror” that Blair has locked us into. Nick Cohen kommentiert diesen Irrsinn aus aktuellem Anlass folgendermaßen:

It is worth picking apart the assumptions behind that paragraph. The most laughable and condescending is that the proponents of psychotic and ultra-reactionary religious violence do not mean what they say. They may condemn “what we hold dear,” democracy, the emancipation of women and homosexuals, the rule of law, secularism and freedom of speech and of the press, but we should forget about that. They may say that they want to subjugate women and murder Jews, homosexuals and apostates, but we should not take them at their word.

Rather we should see radical Islamism in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere not as an autonomous movement with a totalitarian ideology of its own but as a rational response to our provocations. Western foreign policy is the “root cause” of our enemies’ rage, not our Western liberalism. The security measures western governments take to protect populations from radical Islam are equally culpable because they “encourage racism” by targeting Muslims.

If like “lucky Sweden,” we followed a neutralist foreign policy, then we would not be targets, and thus have no need to institute “racist” policing policies. We would be safe.
